Secondary Insurance Claims Billing and Follow-Up
An account is not finished simply because the primary payer processed its claim. Synergy can assess a secondary-claim assignment and identify which balances need a submission, payer follow-up or reconciliation.
Understand why the secondary balance is still open
We distinguish claims waiting for a primary remittance, claims awaiting a secondary submission, rejected claims, denied claims and balances that need correction in the practice ledger. These situations require different actions; repeatedly sending the same claim does not resolve the underlying status.
The review includes the coverage order recorded by the practice, primary adjudication information and any known crossover or secondary submission status. We confirm what is documented before deciding whether to submit, correct, follow up or ask the office for more information.
Define how a secondary-only assignment works
A practice can retain its current initial billing workflow while assigning a defined secondary follow-up scope. The handoff specifies which accounts are included, the system of record, access to relevant remittances and the contact for missing information.
We document responsibility for posting, corrections, permitted adjustments and unresolved coordination-of-benefits questions. Patient responsibility is reviewed against the actual payer responses and coverage details rather than assumed from an open balance alone.
Reconcile actions with the account balance
Useful reporting connects the account’s last action, payer response and next step to its remaining balance. It separates a payment from an adjustment, transfer or other ledger change. A lower aging balance alone does not establish how much cash was collected.
Synergy’s public anonymous Medisoft case describes secondary follow-up while the practice kept initial billing. The case reports its scope and measurement limits. We can discuss whether a similar division of responsibilities fits your software and backlog, without promising the same outcome.
Our Medisoft secondary-claim work
Our public anonymous case describes secondary-claim follow-up while the practice retained initial billing. See the reported balances, scope and measurement limits.
What to discuss first
- Whether initial billing remains with your current team.
- Approximate secondary backlog and available aging reports.
- Access to primary remittances and prior secondary claim status.
- Who will approve corrections and handle coverage questions.
Common questions
Can you work only secondary claims?
We can assess a defined secondary-only assignment. We agree which accounts, tasks, access and reporting are included before work begins.
Does a primary payment prove a secondary claim was sent?
No. The secondary submission or crossover status must be checked in the applicable workflow. The primary remittance and payer response guide the next action.
